The Maddest Hatter

A world of my own
Where we’re all mad
With nothing being what it is
Where people lend a helping hand
Everything being what it isn’t
Where mercury’s poison is gone
And what is, it wouldn’t be
My brain, as yours
And what it wouldn’t be, it would
Your brain, as mine
You see?
You ought to know
How much like me you seem
This poem about The Hatter from Alice's Adventures in Wonderland compares and contrasts the behavior of the character and how the character is treated to how actual hatters’ in the 1800s mental health suffered as they contracted mercury poisoning and how they were treated by society.
